You join a software team in Ho Chi Minh City or work with an outsourcing team in Hanoi. At the first stand-up someone says: Hôm qua em đã fix xong cái bug ở màn hình login, hôm nay em sẽ làm tiếp phần API. You catch fix, bug, login and API. Everything in between goes past you.
That is a common first experience. Many Vietnamese developers drop English technical terms into Vietnamese sentences, so the nouns are often the part you already know. What slows you down is the frame around them: who is addressing whom as anh, chị or em, which small word marks a finished action, and how a request is softened so it sounds like a colleague and not an order.
This article is for engineers, testers and project managers who work with Vietnamese-speaking teammates or clients. It has vocabulary grouped by what happens in a project, five grammar points, three dialogues you can read aloud and a game to play at the end. Most Vietnamese teams can also work in English, so none of this is a requirement. It is what makes the side conversations, and the trust that grows from them, much easier.

Three kinds of Vietnamese on a software team
Vietnamese does not conjugate verbs, but it marks relationships heavily through pronouns and small particles. The table shows what you will typically hear in a software company.
| Speaking or writing to | Typical style | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Teammates and seniors in chat or at stand-up | Anh, chị, em by age and seniority, particles such as ạ and nhé | Anh ơi, anh review giúp em cái pull request này nhé. |
| Clients and management in meetings | Fuller sentences, dạ and xin, tôi more common | Dạ, tôi xin báo cáo tiến độ ạ. |
| Tickets and documents | Short, often imperative, English terms kept as they are | Sửa lỗi hiển thị trên trang thanh toán. |
The third style is the easiest for foreigners. Ticket titles and commit messages are short, and many technical words are written in English exactly as in your own team. The first two styles are where the pronoun choice matters, and that is the topic of the first grammar point below.
One more note on spelling. Vietnamese is written in the Latin alphabet with tone marks, and the tone changes the word. A few pairs from daily work make the point: nhanh means fast and nhánh means branch, sửa means to fix and sữa means milk. In chat you may see people drop the marks, but in documents and ticket titles they are normally written.
Vocabulary for a working day in a Vietnamese team
The tables follow the order in which a project runs. The set you play in the game is the first 41 entries across these five tables, plus a few extras such as bị kẹt, xác nhận and làm rõ that you will hear almost immediately.
Clients, requirements and documents
| Vietnamese | Meaning | Example | Translation |
|---|---|---|---|
| khách hàng | client, customer | Khách hàng muốn thêm thanh toán bằng mã QR trước đợt khuyến mãi 9/9. | The client wants to add QR payment before the 9/9 sale. |
| quản lý dự án | project manager | Chị Hà, quản lý dự án, chốt lịch họp với khách vào sáng thứ Ba. | Ms Ha, the project manager, fixed the client meeting for Tuesday morning. |
| lập trình viên | developer | Nhóm có sáu lập trình viên và hai tester. | The team has six developers and two testers. |
| yêu cầu | requirement (also: to request) | Yêu cầu này do bộ phận kinh doanh đưa ra. | This requirement came from the sales department. |
| tài liệu đặc tả | specification document | Tài liệu đặc tả ghi rõ số tiền tối đa cho mỗi lần chuyển. | The specification states the maximum amount per transfer. |
| tính năng | feature | Tính năng chuyển tiền bằng mã QR đã xong. | The QR transfer feature is finished. |
| backlog | backlog (said as in English) | Em xếp việc này vào backlog của sprint sau nhé. | I will put this in the next sprint backlog. |
| ticket | ticket (said as in English) | Anh để lại ghi chú trong ticket cho em nhé. | Please leave a note in the ticket for me. |
| biên bản họp | meeting minutes | Biên bản họp nằm trong thư mục chung trên Google Drive. | The minutes are in the shared folder on Google Drive. |
| báo cáo tiến độ | progress report | Cuối mỗi tuần em gửi báo cáo tiến độ cho chị Hà. | At the end of each week I send a progress report to Ms Ha. |
| xác nhận | to confirm | Anh xác nhận giúp em số điện thoại này đã đăng ký chưa nhé. | Could you confirm whether this phone number is registered? |
| làm rõ | to clarify | Em muốn làm rõ cách tính phí chuyển tiền ạ. | I would like to clarify how the transfer fee is calculated. |
Notice that the example sentences use three different words for "I": anh, chị and em. They are not interchangeable. They tell the listener whether the speaker is older or younger than the listener, and the next sections come back to this.
Meetings, schedule and estimates
| Vietnamese | Meaning | Example | Translation |
|---|---|---|---|
| họp daily | daily stand-up | Họp daily bắt đầu lúc 9 giờ 15, ai ở nhà thì vào qua Zoom. | The daily stand-up starts at 9:15, and people at home join over Zoom. |
| sprint | sprint (said as in English) | Sprint này nhóm tập trung sửa lỗi trước Tết. | This sprint the team focuses on fixing bugs before Tet. |
| hạn chót | deadline | Hạn chót là thứ Sáu trước kỳ nghỉ Tết. | The deadline is the Friday before the Tet holiday. |
| ước lượng | to estimate, an estimate | Em ước lượng phần giao diện mất hai ngày, phần máy chủ mất ba ngày. | I estimate the interface takes two days and the server side three days. |
| khẩn cấp | urgent | Lỗi thanh toán này khẩn cấp, mình xử lý ngay nhé. | This payment bug is urgent, let us handle it right away. |
| tạm hoãn | on hold | Phần đăng ký bằng khuôn mặt đang tạm hoãn vì chờ pháp lý. | The face-registration part is on hold waiting for legal. |
| bị kẹt | to be stuck, blocked | Em đang bị kẹt vì chưa có quyền truy cập vào máy chủ. | I am stuck because I do not have access to the server yet. |
| chậm tiến độ | behind schedule | Dự án đang chậm tiến độ vì khách đổi yêu cầu giữa chừng. | The project is behind schedule because the client changed requirements midway. |
Vietnamese team members often say họp daily or just daily. Họp means to hold a meeting and is the verb that goes with almost any meeting: họp nhóm, họp khách hàng, họp tiến độ. It is worth learning as a unit.
Code, review and testing
| Vietnamese | Meaning | Example | Translation |
|---|---|---|---|
| mã nguồn | source code | Mã nguồn được lưu trên GitLab của công ty. | The source code is stored on the company GitLab. |
| nhánh | branch | Anh tạo nhánh mới từ nhánh chính cho phần này. | I will create a new branch from the main branch for this part. |
| commit | commit (said as in English) | Mỗi commit nên ghi rõ mã ticket. | Each commit should state the ticket number. |
| pull request | pull request (said as in English) | Chị Lan vừa mở pull request cho phần chuyển tiền. | Lan just opened a pull request for the transfer part. |
| review code | code review | Review code xong thì chị báo em để em sửa nhé. | Tell me when the code review is done so I can make the fixes. |
| gộp | to merge | Khi pull request được duyệt, anh sẽ gộp vào nhánh chính. | Once the pull request is approved I will merge it into the main branch. |
| kiểm thử | testing, to test | Nhóm kiểm thử đang chạy lại toàn bộ các ca thanh toán. | The testing team is re-running all the payment cases. |
| máy chủ | server | Máy chủ bị đầy ổ đĩa lúc nửa đêm. | The server disk filled up at midnight. |
| cơ sở dữ liệu | database | Cơ sở dữ liệu lưu lịch sử giao dịch của khách. | The database stores the customer transaction history. |
| API | API (said letter by letter, in English) | API của ngân hàng trả lỗi vào giờ cao điểm. | The bank API returns errors at peak hours. |
| log | log (said as in English) | Em tìm thấy lỗi đó trong log lúc 2 giờ sáng. | I found that error in the log at 2 a.m. |
Many of these entries are not translated at all. Vietnamese developers say commit, pull request, log and API as in English, and they attach Vietnamese grammar around them. Others, such as nhánh, gộp and máy chủ, are real Vietnamese words. Learn both groups, because a single team uses both.
Bugs and incidents
| Vietnamese | Meaning | Example | Translation |
|---|---|---|---|
| lỗi | bug, error | Màn hình đăng nhập bị lỗi khi nhập mật khẩu dài. | The login screen has a bug when a long password is entered. |
| báo cáo lỗi | bug report | Báo cáo lỗi cần có ảnh chụp màn hình và loại điện thoại. | A bug report needs a screenshot and the phone model. |
| tái hiện | to reproduce | Em tái hiện được lỗi nhưng chỉ khi mạng yếu. | I can reproduce the bug but only on a weak network. |
| điều tra | to investigate | Nhóm đang điều tra vì sao giao dịch bị trừ tiền hai lần. | The team is investigating why a transaction was charged twice. |
| sửa lỗi | to fix a bug | Anh sẽ sửa lỗi này trước buổi họp chiều nay. | I will fix this bug before this afternoon meeting. |
| nguyên nhân gốc | root cause | Nguyên nhân gốc là chứng chỉ bảo mật đã hết hạn. | The root cause was an expired security certificate. |
| sự cố | incident, outage | Sự cố tối qua làm ứng dụng ngừng hoạt động khoảng 30 phút. | Last night incident took the app down for about 30 minutes. |
| hotfix | hotfix (said as in English) | Nhóm phát hành hotfix vào lúc 11 giờ đêm. | The team released the hotfix at 11 p.m. |
Lỗi and sự cố are not the same size. Lỗi is a specific bug, and sự cố is an incident that affects the service or many users. When someone says có sự cố rồi (there is an incident now), the conversation moves to the incident channel and the usual tasks pause.
Environments and releases
| Vietnamese | Meaning | Example | Translation |
|---|---|---|---|
| môi trường staging | staging environment | Môi trường staging dùng dữ liệu giả, không dùng dữ liệu của khách. | The staging environment uses fake data, not customer data. |
| môi trường production | production environment | Mình tránh sửa trực tiếp trên môi trường production. | We avoid editing directly on the production environment. |
| bản phát hành | release (the version) | Bản phát hành này có thanh toán bằng mã QR. | This release includes QR payment. |
| triển khai | to deploy | Bên vận hành sẽ triển khai vào khoảng nửa đêm. | The operations team will deploy around midnight. |
| rollback | rollback (said as in English) | Quy trình rollback được ghi trong tài liệu vận hành. | The rollback procedure is written in the operations document. |
| nghiệm thu | acceptance (the client signs off) | Sau khi nghiệm thu, khách sẽ thanh toán đợt cuối. | After acceptance, the client will make the final payment. |
Nghiệm thu is the word to learn in any project with an outside client. It means the client checks the work against what was agreed and signs it off, and it is usually tied to the final payment. In conversation, people also say test nghiệm thu for the acceptance test.
Five patterns behind everyday workplace Vietnamese
1. Pronouns: anh, chị, em, bạn, mình, tôi
Vietnamese has no single word for "I" and "you". Instead people use kinship terms by relative age and seniority. Anh is an older man or a male senior, chị is an older woman or a female senior, and em is someone younger or junior. Speakers use the same word for themselves and for the other person, depending on who is talking. Bạn is a neutral word for peers, mình means "I" or "we" in a friendly way, and tôi is a plain, slightly formal "I".
- Anh ơi, anh review giúp em cái pull request này nhé.
- Chị Hà, em xin báo cáo tiến độ ạ.
- Mình họp lúc chín giờ nhé.
The usual learner mistake is to translate "I" and "you" as tôi and bạn in every sentence. It is grammatically correct, and in team chat it sounds distant, like a formal letter. A safer approach is to ask once how people want to be addressed. Many Vietnamese colleagues will call you anh or chị followed by your first name, and you can reply in the same way or use their name with anh, chị or em depending on age.
2. Polite particles: ạ, dạ, nhé, giúp
Ạ marks respect at the end of a sentence when you speak to someone older or more senior. Dạ is a polite "yes" or an answer to being called. Nhé is a softener that turns a statement into a friendly request or confirmation, and in the south people often say nha. Giúp, as in anh giúp em, means "help me" and is the natural way to ask for a favour in a team.
- Dạ, em xem ngay ạ.
- Chị gửi giúp em log được không ạ?
- Anh review giúp em nhé.
A common mistake is to translate "please" as làm ơn. It is correct but sounds like a plea for a favour, which is heavier than most work requests need. For normal requests, giúp plus nhé is the usual form, and ạ at the end if the person is senior. Overusing ạ in every sentence to a peer can sound strange, so listen to how teammates use it.
3. Đã, đang, sẽ, rồi, chưa: status updates
Vietnamese verbs do not change form. Time is shown by small words before the verb: đã for something done, đang for in progress, sẽ for future. At the end of a sentence, rồi means "already" and chưa means "not yet".
- Em đã sửa lỗi rồi.
- Em đang điều tra nguyên nhân.
- Em sẽ triển khai tối nay.
- Chưa lên production.
Learners tend to add đã to every past event. Vietnamese often drops the marker when the time is clear from context: Hôm qua em sửa xong lỗi đó is perfectly natural. Another distinction that matters in a status update is chưa versus không. Chưa lên production means it is not live yet, while không lên production means it will not go live.
4. Questions with không, chưa and sao
Yes and no questions are built by placing không at the end, or chưa when asking whether something has happened yet. Sao means "why". Answers often repeat the verb or use rồi and chưa, and dạ or vâng adds politeness.
- Lỗi này tái hiện được không?
- Anh review xong chưa ạ?
- Sao lỗi này chỉ xảy ra trên staging?
A common mistake is to answer a không question with a bare có or không, which can sound abrupt to a senior. A fuller answer repeats the verb: Tái hiện được (Yes, it can) or Không tái hiện được (No, it cannot). For chưa questions, answer rồi (already) or chưa (not yet). For example, to Anh review xong chưa ạ? you answer Rồi, or Chưa, anh đang xem.
5. Loanwords and the classifier cái
English words used in Vietnamese stay unchanged. You say deploy, merge, commit in any context without adding endings. Vietnamese nouns often take a classifier. For objects and abstract items, cái is common: cái bug, cái pull request, cái ticket. Developers also use con for bugs in a jokey way, as in con bug này, treating a bug like an animal that must be caught.
- Merge xong rồi.
- Cái pull request này em tạo hôm qua.
- Con bug này khó tái hiện lắm.
The learner mistake is to try to conjugate the English word, as if it needed a past tense. You never say deployed or merging in a Vietnamese sentence. You say đã deploy, đang merge, and use xong (finished) plus rồi to show completion: Deploy xong rồi.
Three scenes: lunch, stand-up and the pre-Tet deadline
A lunch invitation
Much of a team relationship is built outside tickets. Lan is younger than you, so she says em and calls you anh, and she says tụi em for "us younger ones" (in the north you often hear bọn em).
| Role | Vietnamese | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| Lan | Anh ơi, trưa nay anh đi ăn với tụi em không ạ? | Hi, would you like to have lunch with us today? |
| You | Đi chứ. Mọi người định ăn gì? | Sure. What is everyone planning to eat? |
| Lan | Tụi em định ăn cơm tấm gần công ty. Anh ăn cay được không ạ? | We plan to have broken rice near the office. Can you eat spicy food? |
| You | Anh ăn cay được một chút thôi. Cho anh ít ớt nhé. | Only a little. Please ask for just a bit of chili for me. |
| Lan | Dạ, được ạ. Mười hai giờ tụi em xuống nhé. | Of course. We will go down at twelve. |
| You | Ừ, anh xuống cùng. Cảm ơn em đã rủ. | OK, I will come down with you. Thanks for inviting me. |
A stand-up with a blocker
Here you are the junior, so you say em, and your team lead, anh Minh, says anh.
| Role | Vietnamese | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| Anh Minh | Chào em. Hôm qua em làm đến đâu rồi? | Hello. How far did you get yesterday? |
| You | Dạ, em đã sửa xong lỗi hiển thị số tiền. Hôm nay em kiểm thử lại phần chuyển tiền ạ. | I finished fixing the amount display bug. Today I will test the transfer part again. |
| Anh Minh | Em có bị kẹt chỗ nào không? | Are you stuck anywhere? |
| You | Dạ có. Script triển khai lên môi trường staging bị lỗi từ sáng qua, em chưa chạy được. | Yes. The deploy script for the staging environment has been failing since yesterday morning and I cannot run it. |
| Anh Minh | Ừ, để anh nhờ bên vận hành xem. Em cứ kiểm thử trên máy em trước nhé. | OK, let me ask the operations team to look. Go ahead and test on your machine first. |
| You | Dạ, em cảm ơn anh. Em sẽ cập nhật trong ticket ạ. | Thank you. I will update the ticket. |
A deadline before Tet
Tet, the lunar new year, is the longest holiday of the year in Vietnam, and teams usually plan around it. Here you are a project manager and the register is more formal: tôi appears and the client is addressed as anh.
| Role | Vietnamese | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| Client | Trước Tết mình có kịp phát hành tính năng chuyển tiền bằng QR không anh? | Can we release the QR transfer feature before Tet? |
| PM | Dạ, tôi nghĩ là kịp, nhưng cần chốt yêu cầu trước thứ Tư tuần này ạ. | I think so, but the requirements must be fixed before Wednesday this week. |
| Client | Nếu chốt trễ hơn thì sao? | What if they are fixed later than that? |
| PM | Thì nhóm sẽ phải kiểm thử gấp, và nguy cơ có lỗi sẽ cao hơn. Tôi đề nghị phát hành sau Tết cho an toàn. | Then the team must test in a hurry and the risk of bugs goes up. I suggest releasing after Tet to be safe. |
| Client | Anh gửi tôi lịch cụ thể được không? | Could you send me a concrete schedule? |
| PM | Dạ được. Tôi sẽ gửi lịch chi tiết, kèm mốc đóng băng code, trước chiều mai ạ. | Yes. I will send a detailed schedule, with the code freeze date, before tomorrow afternoon. |
| Client | Được, cảm ơn anh. | OK, thank you. |
Đóng băng code (code freeze) is a useful phrase here. It is the date after which no new changes go into the release, only critical fixes. In the third scene the PM does not simply say no. He gives the condition, the risk and a recommendation, which is the way many Vietnamese clients prefer to hear a hard answer.
Practising alongside a real team
Play the IT set in Falling Stars or Pop It until you can see lỗi, nhánh or nghiệm thu and say the meaning. Then open a ticket or a chat channel from your own team, underline five words from the tables and read the whole sentence aloud, tone marks included.
For listening, choose an episode from the Vietnamese podcasts, listen one sentence at a time and type what you hear. Dictation shows you where you mishear, typically tones that sound close such as nhanh and nhánh, and the sentence-final particles that beginners skip. For a structured route, see the courses, and use the vocabulary test to see where you stand.
Outside WELE, VietnamesePod101 has dialogues and lessons at every level, and italki lets you book one-to-one tutors, including some who work in IT. For reading, Viblo is a Vietnamese developer community where engineers write technical posts in their own words, which shows how real teams explain things. When you want to test yourself, the VPT mock test on WELE shows where you stand.
If your team is split across time zones, a small daily habit works better than a long session: read five chat messages and note two new expressions. If you also work next to other roles, see Vietnamese for office workers and Vietnamese for freelancers, or browse all Vietnamese by profession and the IT page.
Questions people ask before working in Vietnam
Do I need Vietnamese to work with a Vietnamese dev team?
Not always. Many teams work in English, especially in outsourcing companies with foreign clients. Vietnamese becomes useful for the conversations around the work: lunch, side chat, understanding who is stuck, and getting trust from teammates. Ask your team about their working language before you plan how much to learn.
Should I learn the Hanoi or the Ho Chi Minh City accent?
Learn the one that matches your team. The core IT vocabulary is the same. The main differences are some tones and particles, for example nhé in the north and nha in the south, and a few everyday words.
Why do Vietnamese developers mix English words into Vietnamese?
Most tools and terms in software come from English, so many words simply stay as they are: commit, deploy, ticket. Others, such as lỗi, nhánh and máy chủ, are Vietnamese and are used alongside them. Which one a person picks depends on the team and the context.
How should I address my Vietnamese colleagues?
Use anh or chị plus the first name for colleagues who are clearly older than you, and em plus the first name for those younger. If you are unsure, bạn plus the first name is neutral and acceptable. After a few days, listen to how others address each other and copy that.
How important are tones?
They matter, because the tone changes the word: nhanh is fast and nhánh is a branch. Context usually saves you in a conversation, but wrong tones can make a sentence hard to understand. Learn each word with its tone from the start.
One small step
At your next stand-up, try one sentence with đã or đang, one with ạ and one with nhé, for example Em đã sửa xong rồi ạ. The set to play first is in Falling Stars.
